 One You Can't Deny.. September 1, 2010

I watched Goodfellas the other day for probably the 50th time and I have got to say it is one of those rare films that you can love and appreciate even more over time, ...even if you already loved it! Being a long time Scorsese fan this is the film that got me started. This is the first one of his films that came out during my lifetime and I have enjoyed it a couple times a year since I was about 8 (not that it's a good idea to let an 8 year old watch this film, it is very graphic!). The direction is flawless as usual, the screenplay is wonderful, based on the bestselling book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi (who co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese), and the acting is fantastic. Joe Pesci earned a long overdue Oscar as Tommy, DeNiro is as incredible as Jimmy "The Gent" and Ray Liotta scored big with the lead role as Henry Hill which will always be his best performance in my opinion. If you enjoy gangster movies, genre movies, or simply movies that are incredible, you have to see this movie. ...a whole bunch of times.

I give the movie five stars because the acting was good, the Northeast mood was captured well, and the unpleasantness was well illustrated. As a lawyer, I wouldn't defend Henry Hill if my life depended on it. If the movie is accurate, he lead all those men to their death to save his own skin when he could have warned them to blow town. He lead them to Jimmy Burke to get killed and probably blue the whistle on Tommy Disimone to save his own skin. Just as he was in youth, he was as an adult. The price he paid to be alive today left a trail of blood that was unnecessary. If he was any man of principle, when Jimmy wanted him to lead those guys to him to get killed, or when the Gambinos were going to "make" Tommy, he should have informed the future victims and went to the authorities. But, he didn't. That's probably why he looks like a strung out drug addict, musing about the trail of destroyed lives he left in his path. That's, of course, dependent upon the assumption of him having a conscience. Maybe his addiction is just another manifestation of his compulsion to self gratification. He had best repent ask Jesus Christ to save him from his sins. If he had no reservations about ratting, why couldn't he rat in such a way that he and everybody could have lived? He's just too selfish. What glory is there in that?

Quality quite good except that halfway through the movie the viewer has to get up and flip the DVD to the other side.

I can't believe it is the 20th Anniversary of Goodfellas! This movie is a masterpiece, and appeals to our secret longing to flout the law and the government. Of course, we know that things always turn sour in the end, but we love to vicariously enjoy the ride!
It's so exciting that the Museum of the American Gangster, in New York City, will be having a screening of Goodfellas on Saturday July 24th, 2010 at 6:00pm, with the real Henry Hill! [...]
I'm sure the event is going to be a "hit"!

One of my favorite movies of all time, next to Casino. If you have this on dvd you should definitely get it on blu-ray. The picture quality is nice and the colors are vibrant, not as nice as casino, but you can't tell the difference in picture quality.Audio is excellent as well. I just had to get this on blu-ray to add to my collection.
