| Synopsis:
Federal agent Elliot Ness assembles a personal team of mob fighters to bring Chicago crime boss Al Capone to justice using unconventional means during the mob wars of the 1920s. This fictionalized account of the arrest of Al Capone is heavy on style and gunfire. The end shootout combines a baby carriage and stairs with a nod to Eisenstein's _The Battleship Potemkin_.1920's prohibition Chicago is corrupt from the judges downward. So in going up against Al Capone, Treasury agent Eliot Ness picks just two cops to help him and his accountant colleague. One is a sharp-shooting rookie, the other a seen-it-all beat man. The four of them are ready to battle Capone and his empire, but it could just be that guns are not the best way to get him. |

The blu-ray offers a very good video quality, far superior to the previous DVD. This blu-ray is region free and one of the languages is Castilian Spanish. A must buy.

I was really impressed with the blu ray transfer of this movie. Sometimes with older movies you have to do a side by side comparison to realize the improvement, but for The Untouchables it was clear to me right away that it was an upgrade. The movie looks so good that it's easy to forget that it is 23 years old. This movie was also shot in a way where the blu ray treatment really helps e.g. a lot of closeups of faces and a nice use of color (I compared the scene outside the hotel when the bellboy picks the papers off the red carpet and was pretty amazed at how much "redder" the red was on blu ray).
The sound seemed like it was improved, but I am not enough of a sound expert to know for sure. There are also some extras on here, but I don't know if it's anything that's groundbreaking.

I note that quite a lot on the blu ray movies sold at Amazon don't have uncompressed sound feature, that is there is no DTS-HD and Dolby-TrueHD. Thus the play back does not live up to expectation.

The story of FBI agent Eliott Ness's obsessive goal to bring down the notorious gangster Al Capone. Kevin Costner and Sean Connery are awsome. The movie had humor and tons of guns and action.I recommend this movie to everyone who really loves a great mobster movie.

Organized crime has Chicago bought and paid for under Al Capone.
Police officers and judges dance to the tune of bootleg booze.
This was real life in the prohibition era where the federal law
against alcohol made the Mafia smugglers and brewers kings.
A federal task force was set up under Eliot Ness
and he was a tough as the criminals he fought.
This movie is actually a remake of a TV series from the late 50's early 60's with Robert Stack:
The Untouchables - Season 1, Vol. 1.
Like the westerns about OK Corral, what was historical fact
has tended to run into Hollywwod's glorifications.
The acting here is pretty good and all the period cars are very fine,
but one finds himself doubting the scenes and costumes after seeing a number
of films actually done at that time in black and white.
The baby buggy scene is really fantastic, in which two
treasury agents take on a whole gang of thugs and win.
